ALAN PORTER’S 2020 BREEDING ANALYSIS FOR OMAHA BEACH
Exceptionally talented and exceptional versatile, Omaha Beach defeated the Kentucky Derby winner over nine furlongs in a G1 Derby trial, and top-class sprinters, including older horses in a G1 over six furlongs. Omaha Beach is by War Front, the last great sire son of Danzig. He is a half-brother to Champion Two-Year-Old Filly Take Charge Brandi, out of a daughter of Take Charge Lady, dam of Will Take Charge and Take Charge Indy.
War Front has enjoyed tremendous success with mares from the Sadler’s Wells line, including a trio of G1 winners out of mares by Sadler’s Wells himself. From mares by that horse’s son, Galileo (who is interesting here giving the three-quarters related Seeking the Gold and Miswaki), War Front and sons have no less than nine stakes winners, four of them graded. There are also graded stakes winners out of mares by Sadler’s Wells line sons Montjeu and El Prado (sire of Medaglia d’Oro, Kitten’s Joy and Artie Schiller). War Front also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Theatrical (by Sadler’s Wells’ three-quarters brother Nureyev), and sons of War Front have a G1 winner out of a mare by Pivotal and stakes winners out of mares by Fasliyev and Atticus, all from the Nureyev line.
Omaha Beach is bred on a cross of War Front with a Mr. Prospector line mare, and should do well when bred back over mares from that line. There are G1 winners out of mares by Miswaki (sire of Black Tie Affair; grandsire of Formal Gold) and Woodman, who are both three-quarters related to Seeking the Gold, the broodmare sire of Omaha Beach. The cross with mares from the Forty Niner has been a G1 producing one, and has worked through Distorted Humor (sire of Flower Alley, SharpHumor, Drosselmeyer, Maclean’s Music and Jimmy Creed), Coronado’s Quest and Trippi, and can also be found through Editor’s Note, End Sweep, Jules, Luhuk, Gold Fever, Banker’s Gold, Roar and Twining. Mares by Fusaichi Pegasus – a horse bred like Distorted Humor – have also met with success under War Front line stallions.
There is a G1 winner out of a mare by Smart Strike, whose sons include Curlin, Lookin at Lucky and English Channel. There are graded stakes winners out of mares by Street Cry and his son Street Sense, with Street Boss being another source. A son of War Front has a G1 winner out of a mare by City Zip, a son of Carson City, and a stakes winner out of mare by Five Star Day, which also suggests daughters of Pollard’s Vision or Cuvee.
There is a War Front stakes winner out of a mare by Gone West as well as stakes winners from mares by that horses sons Speightstown (sire of Munnings) and Mr. Greeley, which would encourage trying mares by Grand Slam (sire of Limehouse), Elusive Quality (sire of Quality Road) and Proud Citizen.
Omaha Beach is inbred to Champion Sprinter Rubiano, and should do very well with other strains of that horse’s sire, Fappiano. War Front has been extremely good with mares from that line particularly through Unbridled, via Empire Maker (sire of Pioneerof the Nile and Bodemeister), Broken Vow, Grindstone (sire of Birdstone) and Unbridled’sSong (sire Rockport Harbor, First Defence, Old Fashioned, Half Ours, Dunkirk, Even The Score, Graydar and Songandaprayer). It could also be worth considering mares from the Quiet American branch, including through Midnight Lute.
War Front and sons have enjoyed tremendous success with mares by A.P. Indy and sons. Particularly effective has been the cross with daughters of Pulpit, which has produced at least eight stakes winners, and there is already also a stakes winner out of a mare by that horse’s son, Tapit (sire of Tapizar and Trappe Shot). Other sons of Pulpit include Sky Mesa and Stroll. There are also War Front stakes winners out of mares by Malibu Moon and Old Trieste, which also suggests trying daughters of Mineshaft, Flatter, Congrats and Bernardini.
The cross of War Front and sons with Roberto line mares has proved to be a very profitable won. There are six stakes winners – three of them G1 – out of mares by Arch, the sire of Blame. He is by Kris S., also sire of Brocco (broodmare sire of a War Front line stakes winner), Kissin Kris, Prized and Rock Hard Ten. There are two G1 winners by War Front out of mares by Roberto’s son Red Ransom, and two stakes winners out of mares by Dynaformer.
War Front carries Moon Glitter, sister to the influential sire, Relaunch. There are already three War Front-line G1 winners with Relaunch in the dam. Omaha Beach has a double of that mare, so should particularly like Relaunch. We can note that War Front has G1 winners out of mares by Relaunch-line stallions Officer and Tiznow (sire of Tiz Wonderful, Colonel John, Gemologist and Tizway).
From the Blushing Groom line, War Front has a champion out of a mare by Rahy and a G2 winner out of a mare by Housebuster (by Mt. Livermore, also the sire of Orientate), a champion out of a mare by Maria’s Mon (sire of SuperSaver and Monarchos) and G1 winner out of a mare by Known Fact.
