After inspecting the entire Book One catalogue at Karaka we came to a realisation – first season stallion Hello Youmzain was the best sire prospect to stand in NZ in a number of years. On type, his progeny are built to run fast, and early, as opposed to your more traditional NZ bred yearlings who require a bit more time and patience. He’s set to make a real impact when his progeny hit the racetracks of Australasia later this year, and we want to be involved on the ground floor. We identified three fillies in the sale we wanted to buy, and after being underbidder to David Ellis of Te Akau Racing on the first at $240k, we were thrilled to purchase this filly out of River Mist for $150k.

A top class performer in Europe, Hello Youmzain was a Group 2 winning 2yo of the Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte in France, who then trained on to win twice at Group 1 level as an older horse. He’s by a Champion son of Danehill in Kodiac, a sireline we know works so well under Australian racing conditions, and was acquired by Cambridge Stud at the latter end of his racing career to report for stud duty in NZ.

The filly’s dam, River Tribe is a daughter of Pierro from one of Victoria’s better sprinting families which includes the likes of River Dove and her sire son Headwater, River Crossing, Kulgrinda, Cross Current, Captivant and her own half-sister Willow Creek, a multiple stakes winner. River Tribe’s first foal, by Spirit of Boom, sold for $300k at last year’s sales and is now in work with Tony Gollan in Queensland. Pierro is fast developing himself as a huge broodmare sire influence, with daughters of Pierro that go to stud producing an extraordinary 10% stakes-winners to runners. These include G1 Golden Rose and CF Orr winner, and now stallion Jacquinot, undefeated stakes-winning 2yo Karavas and exciting stakes-winning and G1 placed 3yo I Am Unstoppable. Each of those three listed are also by Danehill line stallions.

The filly herself is just beautiful. Raised at the famed Cambridge Stud, aside from being a powerhouse and terrific mover, she’s a gorgeous dark bay colour with a lovely head and a big pair of ears on her, which as we know is a great sign for a filly. She’s incredibly elegant and has a great temperament to boot, extremely important for a potentially successful 2yo.
