DAINTY BESS is a lightly raced Japanese import by a sire we know well in Australia. Maurice has been shuttling to Arrowfield Stud for some time and is building an excellent record in both hemispheres. Dainty Bess’ dam Rosellina is from a progressive family that continues to add black-type horses to the pedigree.

We can’t wait to get him to Australia.

He showed his ability with a second placing on debut, finishing 0.1 lengths behind Velociraptor, who later won the Open Nojikiku Stakes. All but one of the other horses in the 11-horse field in that race went on to become winners, proving the level of the race was high.

That was the best result from his six starts to date. Admittedly, his form appears to have tapered off after that run but he has continued to put on weight and is still developing into a lovely horse. As is sometimes the case with these Japanese-bred horses, he will relish the chance to continue to mature.

We purchased Dainty Bess from Silk Racing Club who originally offered him for a total of 40 million yen

SIRE: MAURICE

Maurice was as tough as racehorses come. He raced 18 times for 11 wins and two placings. He won six Group 1s, three each as a four and five-year-old which shows Dainty Bess will continue to improve with racing.

Maurice campaigned internationally, winning three of his Group 1s in Hong Kong.

Since coming to Australia as a shuttle stallion in 2017, he has produced 25 Stakes winners and five Group 1 winners. Hitotsu was a devastating winner of two Derby’s (VRC and ATC) as well as the Australian Guineas which he won first-up. Showing his versatility as a stallion, he also has Group 1-winning sprinter Mazu.

DAM: ROSELLINA

Rosellina showed staying ability during her career with wins at 2000m and 2400m from her 13 starts. She wasn’t an overly big mare which highlights how tough she was to be winning over those distances. She had a solid turn of foot, getting back in her races. She is a member of the ‘Rose’ family, the same family as our own Meiner Legacy.

Meiner Legacy, of course, arrived in Australia a maiden from Japan and has gone on to win five races in Australia. Two of those victories were City races.

Breeding Nicks.

Maurice and Rosellina’s sire, King Kamehameha, combined has proven to be a strong cross. They combine for a high winning strike rate. They combine for 25 winners from 43 starters. That’s running at just under 60% w/r. Those 25 winners have won a total of 61 races.

Group 3 Niigata Kinen winner Nocking Point and Albilla who who has won four races in eleven starts are just two of the successful horses bred on this cross.
