DUNDEEL – $82,500

The champion 3YO, the six-time Group 1 winner & weight-for-age superstar of Australia. Now one of Australia’s most exciting young sires with 6 Group 1 winners including this season’s outstanding dual Group 1 2YO winner Militarize.

Two years ago we predicted that Dundeel’s 2020 and 2021 crops would take him to a whole new level of performance.

The fulfilment of that prediction began with his first two million-dollar yearlings sold in 2022. It has continued with his eight 2YO winners in 2022/23. And hit home with the emergence of Dundeel’s exceptional 2YO son Militarize, winner of the Inglis Sires’ Produce S. G1 & Champagne S. G1 in the Autumn of 2023.

Dundeel broke into the top 10 on the Australian General Sires’ Premiership in April 2023 where his season earnings of more than $10 million put him in the company of Champion Sires Snitzel, Written Tycoon, Savabeel & I Am Invincible.

And his star is still rising…

Progeny

Dundeel announced his arrival as a major sire-in-the-making with a rapid-fire sequence of six stakeswinners in the first four months of 2019. Three of them were Group 1 winners:  Timeform Australia’s co-Champion 2YO & Champagne S. G1 winner Castelvecchio; Champion New Zealand 2YO Yourdeel; and South African Classic winner Atyaab.

The following Spring they were joined by Dundeel’s fourth Group 1 winner from his first two crops, Caulfield Guineas G1 winner Super Seth.

Only Danehill (7) and Redoute’s Choice (5) have ever sired more Group 1 winners in their first three seasons than Dundeel. – John Boyce, TDN Australia & NZ, February 2020

Castelvecchio chimed in with a world-class performance when runner-up to Japan’s Horse of the Year Lys Gracieux in the 2019 Cox Plate G1, and returned in the Autumn of 2020 to add the Rosehill Guineas G1 to his record.

Both Super Seth & Castelvecchio retired to stud in 2020, but it didn’t take long for Dundeel to unfurl his 5th Group 1 winner, the Western Australian star Truly Great. His 5 wins from 7 starts between October 2020 and January 2021 featured three dominant Group victories, including the $1 million Kingston Town S. G1. Sadly, Truly Great died in March 2021.

Fresh talent arrived in the form of  2YO Let’srollthedice (VRC Sires’ Produce S. G2, 3rd ATC Sires’ Produce S. G1), 3YOs Victoria Quay (Wakeful S. G2) & Ain’tnodeeldun (Listed wins at Flemington & Morphettville) and Group 1 performers She’s Ideel, Entente, Hit The Shot, Let’s Karaka Deel & Teewaters – all among Dundeel’s 24 stakes horses in 2020/21 and 2021/22.

Dundeel’s 8 winners of 16 Group & Listed Races in 2022/23 come from five of his six crops and are headed by the sensational 2YO colt Militarize, 3YOs Bengal Boy & Dunkel and high-class mares Hope In Your Heart & Aquacade, and multiple stakeswinner The Inevitable.

Dundeel’s book quality and yearling prices have followed the path of his escalating career. He has more than 500 foals & foals-to-come bred on his $66,000 fee and 38 yearlings from his 2020 & 2021 crops have made $300,000 or more at major Australian sales.

The 303 yearlings sold from Dundeel’s first 5 crops averaged 5.4 times his initial $25,000 fee and 39 made $250,000 or more.

His 49 yearlings, conceived on a fee of $60,000, averaged $315,000 across the 2022 Magic Millions & Inglis Easter Sales. They included Dundeel’s first seven-figure sales, the $1 million colt out of Honesty Prevails and the $1.7 million filly from Stay With Me.

Buyers of Dundeel’s 2022 yearlings include:
Hawkes Racing (x 3), John O’Shea (x 4), China Horse Club, Newgate Bloodstock & Trilogy Racing (x 2), Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott (x 5; with First Light Racing, Kestrel Thoroughbreds & Chris Rutten), Mick Price (x 3), Ciaron Maher (x 2), Phill Cataldo, Matt Laurie & ARJB Racing, Ottavio Galletta, Mitchell Bloodstock, Suman Hedge, Bjorn Baker & Clarke Bloodstock, Kris Lees, Nigel Blackiston, Godolphin Australia, Star Thoroughbreds & Randwick Bloodstock, Cambridge Stud, Ryan & Alexiou Racing, Legend Racing & Avenue Bloodstock,  Darby Racing & Triple Crown Syndications.

Race Performance

Right from the start of his career, Dundeel did what very few horses are able to do and made history every step of the way:

  • Progressed from a New Zealand 2YO maiden win to Sydney 3YO Group 1 success in five starts in 2012.
  • The first horse in history to win all four Group 1 3YO races in Sydney, the Spring Champion Stakes, Randwick Guineas, Rosehill Guineas and Australian Derby.
  • Won the Derby by 6 lengths, running his final 400 metres faster than world champion sprinter Black Caviar in the 1200-metre T.J. Smith Stakes on the same day.
  • Resumed at 4 to defeat previously unbeaten champion mare Atlantic Jewel in the Group 1 MRC Underwood Stakes.
  • His bravura grand final victory in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes was a contest worthy of the inaugural running of The Championships.
  • Rated 129 by Timeform alongside Hall of Fame champions Dulcify, Makybe Diva, Northerly & Sunline.
