The very best racehorses with the very best pedigrees on occasion make the very best stallions. That recipe belongs to Savabeel, our magnificent son of all-conquering Zabeel, who has now won the Grosvenor Award (Champion NZ Sire) for eight consecutive seasons. Additionally he has also won his seventh Centaine Award and has 133 stakes winners including 31 Group 1 winners. He has also won six of the last seven Dewar Awards, reclaiming the title after his barn mate Ocean Park took the honours for the 2019-20 season.
In the modern era, no New Zealand based stallion comes close to achieving the results of Savabeel. The Grosvenor Award is based on progeny earnings, the Dewar Award on combined Australian and New Zealand progeny earnings, and the Centaine Award is for combined progeny earnings worldwide.
To have consistently captured those three stallion awards is testimony to the dominance of Savabeel – it says it all. At Waikato Stud, we acknowledge the significant role played by Savabeel in elevating Waikato Stud to top ranking as the leading vendor at Karaka for seven straight years (2014 – 2020).
Savabeel’s exemplary record of achievement extends to a consistent 72 per cent winners to runners ratio and 11 per cent stakes winners to runners ratio. Not unlike his own sire Zabeel, Savabeel’s level of success has remained consistent if not elevated with maturity.
In 2022, star mare Probabeel retained her New Zealand Thoroughbred Horse of the Year title after an excellent 2021/22 season which saw her win the G1 Caulfield Stakes. The daughter of Savabeel is now preparing for life as a broodmare.
In the 2022/2023 season we saw I Wish I Win explode onto the Australian racing scene. Having made his mark in New Zealand with trainer Jamie Richards, under the care of Peter Moody he took out the $10M Golden Eagle followed by a triumphant display of his turn of foot to win the Group 1 TJ Smith. The latter victory crowned a memorable Saturday at Randwick for Savabeel, as it became a Group 1 double with Major Beel dominating in the Australian Derby – showcasing the versatility of his sire.
It was an extraordinary seven days for Savabeel, as back at Randwick just a week later Chris Waller’s Atishu became his 31st Group 1 winner when taking out the Queen of the Turf Stakes. She was a $260,000 purchase by Go Racing at the 2019 Karaka Book 1 Yearling Sales and we couldn’t be any prouder of what our champ Savabeel is achieving.
In total, Savabeel is the sire of 31 Group One winners, the others being: Pris De Fer, Concert Hall, Mo’unga, The Chosen One, Noverre, Cool Aza Beel, Nicoletta, Shillelagh, Savvy Coup, Sword Of Osman, Hasahalo, Embellish, Kawi, Lucia Valentina, Diademe, Costume, Brambles, Hall of Fame, Pasadena Girl, Sangster, Savaria, Scarlett Lady, Soriano, Sound Proposition, The Perfect Pink, Amarelinha & Savy Yong Blonk.
Like Ocean Park, on the track Savabeel won the most prestigious weight-for-age race in Australasia – the W.S. Cox Plate. Class has prevailed.
