The Machine Gun: Roman Consul Stakes & Magic Millions
No Comments

The Machine Gun faces his toughest assignment yet in Saturday’s Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes at Rosehill, just two days before his younger half-brother is offered at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Horses in Training Sale.

The unbeaten Peter Snowden-trained colt has already attracted a reported $2 million offer. His connections rejected it following his Listed Tattersall’s Stakes victory at Eagle Farm in June, choosing to continue racing the son of Stay Inside.

His return in the 1200-metre Roman Consul Stakes provides another opportunity to assess his ability ahead of Monday’s auction, where his Russian Revolution half-brother will be offered as Lot 83.

Consigned by Nolen Racing, Benalla, as agent, the younger colt has his own credentials to interest buyers, including one of the fastest recorded breeze-up times at the sale.

From broodmare purchase to stakes success

The family’s recent history includes Trilogy Racing’s $400,000 purchase of Don’ttelltheboss at the 2022 Inglis Chairman’s Sale.

The Street Boss mare produced The Machine Gun, a colt by Golden Slipper winner Stay Inside who has since established an unbeaten record from two starts.

Offered through Blue Gum Farm at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, The Machine Gun was purchased for $300,000 by Trilogy Racing in partnership with Jason Warren Racing and Suman Hedge Bloodstock.

He made a winning debut at Canterbury in June before adding the Listed Tattersall’s Stakes at Eagle Farm later that month.

Those performances prompted a reported $2 million offer, which his connections declined. The Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes remains a spring target, although his immediate focus is Saturday’s Group 2 assignment.

For his owners, the decision to retain The Machine Gun offers the prospect of further racing success while carrying the risks and costs of continuing his career.

For buyers considering his younger half-brother, another strong performance would add to an already promising family record.

Buyers get their chance on Monday

The Russian Revolution colt catalogued as Lot 83 recorded a 10.30-second breeze over 200 metres at the Gold Coast on 22 September.

That was the third-fastest recorded breeze-up time for the sale, placing him among the leading performers in the published results.

Research from the University of Sydney analysed pedigree and racing performance records from more than 135,000 thoroughbred horses, finding that breeding patterns can influence athletic performance. While the study examined inbreeding rather than sibling sale prospects, it highlights the value of examining pedigree alongside a horse’s individual characteristics.

The official Magic Millions Lot 83 catalogue includes breeze-up and parade footage, allowing prospective buyers to review the colt ahead of the auction.

X-rays and a scoping video are also available to registered veterinarians through the sale repository.

Although Lot 83 is listed as BOBS eligible, the catalogue specifically states that he is not eligible for nomination to the Magic Millions Race Series at this Horses in Training Sale. That distinction matters when assessing his future racing opportunities.

His 10.30-second breeze is a notable result, but it remains one part of the assessment. Buyers must also consider his conformation, preparation, veterinary findings and suitability for their intended racing programme.

Inspections run from Saturday, 10 October, through Monday, 12 October, at the Magic Millions Sales Complex in Bundall.

The auction begins at 3.30 pm AEST on Monday, following breeze-up sessions held at the Gold Coast and Scone.

Buyers can also access TripleS reports containing stride length, stride frequency and speed data through the Magic Millions sale information page.

From earlier listings to stakes success

The Machine Gun previously appeared in Thoroughbred Sales’ July 2025 weekly listings, when the Stay Inside colt out of Don’ttelltheboss was in training with Peter Snowden.

Since then, he has won both starts, progressing from a Canterbury maiden victory to Listed success at Eagle Farm.

That progression adds another dimension to the pedigree of his younger half-brother, who arrives at the Gold Coast sale with a strong breeze-up performance of his own.

Saturday’s Roman Consul Stakes will provide a further test of The Machine Gun’s ability against Group 2 opposition. Monday’s auction will then reveal how buyers value his Russian Revolution half-brother.

The two events offer a timely illustration of how racecourse performances and individual sale preparation can influence interest in a developing thoroughbred family.
