Matthew Williams has been training horses for the past 28 years. Located at Wangoom Lodge, Matthew alongside his wife and racing manager Ultra have established an exceptional training complex that accommodates up to 60 horses in training complimented by their own 90 acre spelling property.
With the availability of the local beaches, Matthew was initially given the opportunity, through Brian Mayfield Smith, Quinton Scott, Tony Noonan and Darren Weir to rehabilitate injured horses.
With successful results the business grew to the point where some of the country’s most talented gallopers come to freshen up and rejuvenate before returning for their next racing campaign. Over several years Matthew has built a strong working relationship with trainers such as Mick Price and Michael Kent junior, consistently having many of their top horses in his care.
Matthew has since branched out into the training industry in his own right, with a team of around 60 horses in work. Leading syndicators OTI and Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock have come on board and had many winners since joining the team.
Career highlights include GAILO CHOP running second and third in the Group 1 Kingston Town, HARBOUR VIEWS winning the Listed Sofitel, TURNITAROUND winning the Eclipse Stakes, UXORIOUS winning the Listed Wangoom Handicap and the Group 3 Spring Stakes. More recently, TOREGENE winning the Country Series Final and LITERARY MAGNATE winning the Group 3 Northwood Plume.
Matthew has trained over 400 winners, several being at the Warrnambool May Cup Carnival.
