Doudle, one of a wave of young Adelaide trainers trying to forge a career in the cutthroat sport of kings, said he owed a lot of his father who helped him kickstart his training career at North Shields, 11km north of Port Lincoln, before moving to Adelaide.
“Dad wasn’t a trainer himself, he wasn’t a rich man that gave me a kickstart, but he helped build me a couple of stables in the backyard before coming to Adelaide,” Doudle said. “He helped out in a lot of ways, he gave me a good work ethic and I owe a lot to him.”
Hard work with inexpensive horses is starting to pay a dividend for South Australian trainer Travis Doudle.
With a team of between six and 10 in work, Doudle says the results have been fantastic.
“I’m really happy with the team and there’s not much money in the stable,” he said.
“I hate the track,” Doudle said. “You’ve got 10 people watching you, you have to be off the track at a certain time and you’re really restricted. You go to the beach, the only thing you are restricted by is the tide times and you can work around that pretty easily.
“That’s more my style. The horse feel better as well as they don’t like being rushed.”
Going forward Doudle has ambitions to establish himself both at Morphettville and a property closer to where he can use nature’s tools to their fullest.
“Long-term I’d like to do a fusion between city and country, and beach training,” Doudle said. “I’d like to have a farm that I can use for trail riding, gallops in the hills and be close enough to Goolwa Beach where I can work while also having a team at Morphettville.
“Being able to mix them around when we need would be ideal.”
